Enhancing Your Relationship with the Outdoors

Public Spaces

Landscape Designer ZDA initially worked with Saint Maria Goretti to design a conceptual plan for outdoor learning spaces throughout their back lawn space. Its overwhelming success moved the project forward into the construction phase. With budget and time constraints, ZDA developed a phased plan to incorporate the design over several years. Over time, Landscape Designer ZDA has worked with teachers to understand the challenges in utilizing outdoor classrooms. It became evident that the transition time physically and mentally for children was a burden for teachers. As a response, ZDA designed a customized “Learning Shed” in which staff can store supplies and quickly transition from indoor to outdoor lessons.

Residential Landscapes

ZDA designed prominent steps and an elevated terrace to create personal, private space for outdoor living, dining, and kitchen prep. The richness of materials enhance the urban lines of this backyard and include: custom designed fire and glass feature, and fabricated cedar and iron privacy trellises, and bluestone patio. Deliberate, minimalist, and low maintenance plant selection soften the space, providing privacy and a sense of place. The heated patio keeps snow off the patio and driveway in the winter, allowing the family to use the space year-round.

Healing Gardens

perennial plant association logoThis award-winning garden creates a woodland sanctuary with a small patio adjacent to the living and music room, and lush shade gardens surrounding a custom wood and glass sculpture (slides 3 and 4). The sculpture was designed and built from recycled building materials and provides delicate screening that plays with light and provides a focal point for the garden. The sculpture’s placement captures and directs energy flows. Paths wind in and around it for enjoyable walks through the gardens.

Waterfront Landscapes

The Van Hise Storybook House was formerly owned by a UW Madison professor of botany who created a native woodland herbarium in the yard. The new owner approached ZDA with the task of updating the property to meet the young family’s needs while preserving the historic character of the house and landscape. New entry patio, breakfast patio, path, and stairways blend seamlessly with the existing stone walls. Plants were selected to complement the collection of native spring ephemerals and woody plants. A green roof on the new garage provides a sunny space for vegetable and herb gardening and includes a secluded seating area.

Commercial Landscapes

Central Storage and Warehouse needed a landscape architect for site development and new construction of the Corporate Headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin. This included design of an outdoor employee wellness garden, and a picnic and grilling area adjacent to the kitchen and break room, that was also viewable from the entrance atrium. ZDA handled site planning, vehicular circulation, parking lot layout, ADA accessibility, stormwater management, site grading, landscape planting plans, and construction observation for the campus.
